The American Flag: Dos And Don'ts

The American flag is regarded with such respect; it is considered to be a living being by many people. There is even a code of federal law that ensures the American flag is always treated properly. With the American flag being such a common symbol seen all around, it can be tough to remember the right rules and regulations to regard when owning one. Read on to find out the most important dos and don'ts when handling an American flag.

DO: Keep the flag in a well lit area, whether it is sunlight or artificial light. If the flag is displayed at night, it must be illuminated properly. It is illuminated properly if you can see the stars and the stripes from a reasonable distance.

DON'T: Display a flag in bad weather. If the flag is an all-weather flag, then it's okay to display it, otherwise it should be brought inside.

DO: American citizens should always salute and/or stand at attention when an American flag is passing them in a ceremony/parade or when it is being hoisted and lowered. Furthermore, the flag should always be hoisted quickly and lowered ceremoniously. When the flag is lowered, it should never touch the ground. There should always be people waiting to take it and store it properly.

DON'T: The flag shouldn't be worn as a costume or uniform and should never be used for any advertising purposes. It shouldn't be embroidered or printed on any item which is disposable, such as napkins or boxes. It should never have any symbol such as a word, letter, number, or picture placed on it or attached to it.

DO: Display the flag on important holidays, including New Years Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day, Election Day, Thanksgiving Day, and many more. It should always be displayed at schools on school days and at other public institutions.

DON'T: Keep a flag on display when it is no longer a fitting emblem of America. When the flag is worn, it should be disposed of in a dignified way. Burning the old, worn flag is seen as the primary way of getting rid of the flag with dignity.

The American flag is the utmost symbol of Independence. It encompasses the entire history of American freedom into one symbol.
